In my daily work, the truth is that I use the most visited sites to go quickly to the places that I visit often.
But what is certain is that there is a lot of debate on the subject on the network, and Chrome could have already avoided it merely by implementing an option that allows disabling those icons. This change improves privacy, but you can remove them as well. So you no longer see images in these thumbnails but are little icons or symbols.
Update: From Chrome version 69, the thumbnails have become icons that represent the website.
